Working on this right now. It’s pretty funny, isn’t it? Cut canvas on canvas, will be sewn with like-colored thread. Part of a diptych with a similar image of pelvis bones from a medical diagram. I’ll paint over it with a pale yellow or rose shade, I think.
Here are some photos I took at the Texas Contemporary Art Fair; the top one is of a painting by Ali Smith - probably 2013 - and the bottom is a large sculptural wheel made of colored sugar, whose creator’s name I’ve misplaced. They’re very impressive.
Alice Neel is awesome because she paints like it’s party time. Lots and lots and lots of paint in big old swathes. She’s a fancy lady. Went to a show of hers at the MFA Houston when I was about 17. It was amazing and a lot bigger than the space I usually see given to female painters, especially contemporary ones. Hurray!
I saw Ali Smith’s work up close at the Texas Contemporary Art Fair in October. It was pretty great; I’d seen a picture in Art in America previously, but didn’t connect the dots until I read her name on the plaque next to the painting. It’s fabulously visceral.
